Haguro Shrine

Haguro Shrine

Haguro Shrine sits atop Mt. Haguro, the central peak of Mt. Shinobu. You’ll have to watch your step on the final ascent up the rocky path. Home to the largest ‘waraji’ straw sandal in Japan which is 12 meters long, weights 2 tons, and requires around 100 people to carry it. It is said to belong to a large ‘Nio’ guardian statue that once stood at the entrance to the shrine.
There are two major festivals that take place in Fukushima City that feature the giant ‘waraji’. The Mt. Shinobu Dawn Procession in early February, and the Waraji Matsuri in early August when the city center is filled with dancing and summer festival fun.
